News on recent online Problems

First of all, the problems caused by the temporary deactivation of the online service between 07 and 13 November 2008 affected only the manuscript handling of the journals published by Copernicus Publications! All services of Copernicus Meetings are already provided with our new own online service Copernicus Office and are therefore secured!

Regarding the manuscript handling by Copernicus Publications, the current situation divides the journals into three groups:

Type 1 – No Impact – All Services were running

The journals of this type are running without any interferences. The manuscript review is anyhow handled separately and the publication production is unaffected.

  • Advances in Geosciences (ADGEO)
  • Advances in Radio Science (ARS)
  • Advances in Science and Research (ASR)
  • Stephan Mueller Special Publication Series (SMSPS)
  • Surveys and Perspectives Integrating Environment and Society (SAPIENS)

Type 2 – All Services are reactivated in the Meantime

The journals of this type were deactivated or with limited services between 07 and 13 November 2008. Now, all services with regard to the review process are online again and the publication production runs in the normal way. We kindly ask all authors and reviewers of these journals to pay a specific attention to the review procedure of the last weeks. In case that any questions may arise, please do not hesitate to contact the Copernicus Publications Editorial Support at editorial@copernicus.org, phone +49-5556-99555-40.

  • Annales Geophysicae (ANGEO)
  • Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics (ACP) & Discussions (ACPD)
  • Atmospheric Measurement Techniques (AMT) & Discussions (AMTD)
  • Biogeosciences (BG) & Discussions (BGD)
  • Climate of the Past (CP) & Discussions (CPD)
  • eEarth (eE) & Discussions (eED)
  • Geoscientific Model Development (GMD) & Discussions (GMDD)

  • Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS)
  • Nonlinear Processes in Geophysics (NPG)
  • Ocean Science (OS) & Discussions (OSD)
  • The Cryosphere (TC) & Discussions (TCD)

Type 3 – Review Services are transformed

Unfortunately, the review process of some journals is still affected. Much to our regret, we will have to handle the editorial support for manuscripts submitted before 19 November 2008 manually. We will inform the involved parties and provide personal help for any review steps! New manuscripts submitted after 19 November 2008 will be handled via the Copernicus Office Editor. The publication production is not affected and is running in the normal way. We assure that we will do our best to bridge this unacceptable time with the most personal assistance! Therefore, we kindly ask you to contact us whenever a question may arise and we will keep the authors and reviewers updated. Copernicus Publications Editorial Support, editorial@copernicus.org, phone +49-5556-99555-40.

  • Astrophysics and Space Sciences Transactions (ASTRA)
  • Drinking Water Engineering and Science (DWES) & Discussions (DWESD)

Background

Up to now, Copernicus Meetings & Copernicus Publications (the Copernicus GmbH in Katlenburg-Lindau) rented a software system from an external software house to provide their customers and projects with online services. Between Friday, 07 November 2008, and Thursday, 13 November 2008, this software system and its applications were inactive or at least limited. On 13 November 2008, Copernicus Publications was able to restart the handling of most of the journals. Unfortunately, some journals are still affected and currently have to be handled manually.

Fortunately, the Copernicus GmbH has already started its new and own online service Copernicus Office by the end of October 2008. Therefore, all services from Copernicus Meetings with regard to the conferences already run through this new system and are therefore not affected. The journals of Copernicus Publications will start the handling of new manuscript submissions from 19 November 2008 on (step-by-step integration of the different journals). Those manuscripts which were already under review before the start of the Copernicus Office, will be finalized by using the old online system, or will be organized alternatively (please see above).

We are very sorry for any inconveniences which were caused by this deactivation of the online service and we kindly ask for the acceptance of our apologies! We will do our best to handle this situation for the benefit of all involved parties, especially for the authors and reviewers of our journals. Please do not hesitate to contact us in case that any questions may arise!
