Online Open Access Publishing

All articles published in Copernicus Publications' Open Access journals as well as the corresponding material like RSS Feeds, XML or supplementary files, are accessible online free of charge for everyone worldwide. Anyone is free to copy, distribute, transmit and adopt the work as long as the original author is given credit. This corresponds to the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License.

Online Open Access Publishing with Copernicus Publications offers even more advantages. We feel responsible to serve the authors in the most personal and professional way to give their work the high visibility and extra value that it deserves. The full spectrum of services for the benefit of our customers includes:

  • Typesetting, Proof-Reading and Copy-Editing: Authors may submit their manuscripts in LaTeX or WORD format and we produce them via pdfLaTeX. We offer copy-editing on request by the editor or the author. All work steps for an article from acceptance to publication are done by one staff member in order to offer the author the most personal and intensive support and service.
  • Immediate Publication: We structure the journals in volumes and issues. Nevertheless, each article will immediately be uploaded onto the online libraries together with its individual publication date to guarantee the fastest publication.
  • Article Alert Service: Everyone is invited to subscribe to the article alert service free of charge. That means, the scientific community will be informed about any new article of interest immediately with the publication of the respective paper.
  • BIBDAT Distribution: The BIBliographic Data Automatic Transfer generates XML files of each new article during the publication and distributes this information file to various scientific databases, search engines, indices and archives worldwide.
  • Archiving of Printed Issues: Besides the e-archiving of the electronic article files we print all issues and archive them in copyright libraries in Germany, UK and the USA.
  • Virtual Special Issues (SI): We publish each SI paper immediately and as a regular paper in a regular issue. This avoids delays due to the different submission times in one SI. Then, the SI papers will be linked to a SI together with an Editorial or Foreword and its individual table of contents.
  • Topical Libraries: Based on the keywords already used for the Article Alert Service, the online libraries of (some of) our journals also offer access via topics. Readers can therefore choose to enter the libraries via volumes and issues, special issues or topics.
  • eCitation of Articles: We use the classical citations to generate URLs to article PDF files or abstract HTML files and we name the files themselves accordingly. For the journal Annales Geophysicae (ANGEO), e.g., the classical citation could be: Ann. Geophys., 12, 1-18, 1994. Our link would be www.ann-geophys.net/12/1/1994 and the corresponding full text PDF angeo-12-1-1994.pdf.
  • Print-on-demand: We offer printed issues for all our journals, as volume subscriptions as well as for single issue orders. Due to the print-on-demand technology we produce the copies very fast and with a minimum print run of one copy.
  • Moderate Service Charges: Our Open Access journals (mostly) run on an author-payment model. We prefer service charges based on the number of pages and the quality of the raw data. Therefore, authors can directly influence and decrease the price for the publication by own efforts.
  • Financial Support for Authors: We cooperate with different partners in order to offer opportunities for authors to get service charges subsidizations or even waivers. The most prominent partners are the Max Planck Society and CNRS INSU.
  • No Colour Charges: Due to the online character of our journals and the digital print we do not charge extra for colour illustrations.
